How Klondike solitaire works

Klondike uses one 52-card deck. Twenty-eight cards begin in seven columns, with one card in the first column, two in the second, and so on. Only the bottom card of each column starts face up. The remaining twenty-four cards form the stock.

Your goal is to move every card to the four foundations, building each suit from Ace through King. On the table, build downward in alternating colors. A black seven accepts a red six, which can hold a black five.

7 ♠6 ♥5 ♣
A legal table sequence: descending ranks, alternating colors.

Moving cards and uncovering space

You may move a face-up sequence together when every card in it follows that order. Moving the last face-up card away from a hidden card turns the hidden card over. An empty column accepts only a King or a valid sequence beginning with a King.

Foundations use a different rule: the next card must be the same suit and one rank higher. An Ace of hearts starts a heart foundation; the two of hearts follows it. A red two of diamonds does not.

Draw one or draw three?

Use the Game rules selector above to choose. In draw one, each stock click exposes one card. In draw three, it exposes up to three cards, but only the top waste card is playable. Playing it reveals the next card underneath. Spider FreeCell allows unlimited recycling of the Klondike stock.

A useful first-move habit

Before drawing, look for a move that uncovers a hidden card. Compare which column it opens and whether moving a King into a gap will reveal another useful card. Moving a low card to its foundation can help, but first check whether you need it to arrange another column.

Why will a card not move?

  • The destination needs the opposite color and the next higher rank.
  • A sequence contains a break in rank or color.
  • An empty column needs a King at the start of the moved sequence.
  • The waste card is covered by another waste card.

Is every Klondike deal solvable?

Gentle mode starts with a verified winning route; Classic shuffle makes no such guarantee. Undo is available in both. A hint can point out a legal move without promising that every choice afterward will win.

For a game with all cards visible, try FreeCell. For longer same-suit runs, try Spider. You can also play a daily draw-one or draw-three challenge.

Go straight to your draw mode

Play Klondike turn one to expose each stock card individually, or play Klondike turn three to work through groups of up to three. Each table keeps its own saved deal.
